~Lesson 7~

Skyscrapers: Creating a City Dynamic

LESSON RATIONALE:
This lesson connects to the idea of community on a larger more urban scale. In the State College Area there are not too many tall buildings, so this lesson introduces students to other forms of architecture and way to design structures. Skyscrapers are very important to the history of architecture and design especially in large cities like New York, but also even in smaller cities like Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. Skyscrapers create interesting and functional spaces that differ so greatly from other buildings. Unintentional products of skyscrapers are skylines. Especially in the aftermath of September 11, the power and importance that can be connected to them can be very strong. In some cases, I hope to introduce these tall buildings to students that have never experienced the grandeur of a tall building. For those students who have, they will be able to share their previous experiences with the class. It is important for students to be aware of the many different aspects that can go into communities and cities from all over the United States.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
-Students will learn a general vocabulary of skyscrapers, skylines, and parts that go into composing them.
-Students will be able to use scale and arrangement.
-Students will become more aware of other communities/cities
-Students will interact with college to create their own skyline
