~Lesson 6~

Building a House: Exploration of Texture, Color, Shape, and Space

LESSON RATIONALE:
Architecture is everywhere in the student’s environment. Sometimes it is noticed, but many times it is just passed by. This lesson will make students aware of the architecture, designing, planning, and building of houses. Students will examine the people, materials, and thought that go into creating a house. Students will discuss the many different textures that go into a building a house like course brick, bumpy stones, smooth siding, and wood texture. The learners will also think about size, shape, and color as well as different surroundings like desert, tropical or mountainous environments. This lesson is one of the key lessons in connecting the idea of community and different things in their surrounding. It will also introduce them to a more architectural perspective as well as other professions needed to build a home. It is important for students to be aware of the options in art related fields as well as things they encounter everyday in their surrounding and in their community.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
-Students will learn a general vocabulary of building materials and people involved in creating/designing/building a house.
-Students will be able to use with shape, color, and space in all steps of the project
-Students will become more aware of creating a plan/sketch (blue print) and then carrying it over into their work.

-Students will interact with different textures and examples to see how many different elements compose the outside of a house.
-Students will follow directions/steps in building their house (using the check list)
