~Lesson 1~

Experiencing Color Around Us

LESSON RATIONALE:
This lesson will introduce children to the concept of color and how it affects their surroundings and environment. Students will examine how individual colors play a role in creating an entire artwork. Students will also talk about how color functions in their moods and emotions and how different colors together, or by themselves signify something. Since color will be built upon in most future lessons and projects, learning about color in this first lesson will provide a strong foundation. This foundation will come with the awareness of colors and their properties.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:

* Learners will obtain the knowledge about complementary colors through learning about Leon, a character in a book that will be read to them, by placing cut outs around the room and in the room’s environment.

*Learners will apply mixing of color using shaving cream and watercolors as the medium.

*Students are introduced to moods and how color affects them.

*Students will be introduced to Jackson Pollock and his technique of applying paint and color to a canvas and will collaborate on their own Pollock like project.
